Art at the ATM

Since mid-March a total of 17 branches of the Hypo Landesbank Vorarlberg as well as its branches in Vienna and Graz are “packaged” with my work “Waterfall”.

Selected messages of the Hypo Landesbank Vorarlberg are reinterpreted for the first time.

Thus, a harmonious arc between the place of the sticker, the message and the image is stretched.

GET ADDICTED

Check the latest post on Peter Mathis' book "Visual Dualism" on Get Addicted To - THE DAILY MIX OF CREATIVE CULTURE: As the title suggests the book especially presents forms of visual contrasts. However, in reality, it achieves a lot more since it brings us face to face with the basic constitution of human perception and its interpretation. Humans primarily perceive through their sense organs and need contrasts to be able to interpret the information and recognise its qualities: small and large, light and dark, loud and quiet, thick and thin, full and empty, contour and space, shape and form, natural and artificial – the list could go on and on since it builds the basis for human perception, per se... Making of ... a book: Part V “Visual Dualism – Dolomites”, Brentei Hütte

I’ve been visiting almost all regions in the Dolomites now, except for the Brenta Group. Throughout autumn I’m watching the weather forecast, hoping on bad weather. And finally! In October I can get going! I definitely need a picture of the Giulia di Brenta. In the morning everything is still covered in dense fog. The bad weather has arrived one day too early. I’m ascending to the Brentei Hütte nevertheless.

After two hours suddenly the fog blanket is torn apart and the Crozzon di Brenta, surrounded by shreds of clouds, is majestically towering high up into the grey sky. This spectacle lasts for about five minutes, and then the mountain has already vanished behind the clouds again. I put the tripod with the mounted camera on my shoulders and head to the hut. There, the roof of the hut! Just an instant later I’m right in front of the hut which to me appears like a lighthouse in the waves. Wow! Tripod and camera ready at hand I’m shooting two times and everything sinks back into the grey fog. Now the book is complete and this picture definitively counts among my favorite ones.

Making of ... a book: Part IV “Visual Dualism – Dolomites”, Moonstruck

I’m waiting for heavy snowfall in the Dolomites since December and now, in the middle of March, the moment has finally come! Immediately I’m hitting the trail, reaching Falzarego Pass in the early afternoon. The mountains and woods are beautifully covered in snow  so finally I can shoot the winter pictures that I’ve been longing for since some time now. Around the evening I'm hiking on Passo Giau to find a lot more fresh snow over here compared to Falzarego Pass.

The sun is setting, bathing the west walls of the Croda da Lago in warm light. After I found an excellent place for the shot, I’m setting up my tripod and start composing the picture with the view on Croda da Lago. A cornice in the sun in the foreground, a dark rock-ridge in the shadow right behind and on the third plane the Croda da Lago. The full moon is rising in the East and exactly at that moment the last rays of the sun are lighting up the crags where the snow is swirling high on the wings of the wind.

Making of ... a book: “Visual Dualism – Dolomites, Magic of the slopes: Dolomites“

I’m taking the chair lift up to the Cinque Torri but I have to admit soon, that I won’t be very successful here. The better option would probably be a side trip to the Small Lagazuoi. Hopefully I’ll be able to capture the idea of “winter sport in the Dolomites” there. Reaching the Falzarego Pass I’m amazed at the huge crowd of people gathering there. That’s not for me! Waiting in the line does not really count among my strengths. So I’m turning on the heel, heading directly to Marmolada. However, using the lifts on the north side does not lead to the crest. So I first have to descend down to Malga Ciapella, to take the cable car to the top from there.

Heading downhill I already notice the incredible number of skiers. And then I can hardly believe my eyes: A huge crowd is encircling the lower terminus of the cable car. So what now? Either back to the car by foot or queuing up. I’m deciding to take the second option and walk right into the mass. Centimeter by centimeter I‘m moving forward. After more than an hour I’m so happy to finally enter the gondola which takes me to the top with a gentle swing. As a reward for all the hassle of the day I’m granted with the magic slopes of the Dolomites and an excellent picture for my book.

To be continued next week.

Making of … a book: “Visual Dualism – Dolomites”, Heiligkreuzkofel

Today I’m heading to the Heiligkreuzkofel in Gadertal. The chair lift is very welcome to make the ascent more comfortable. An elevation gain of 700 m within in 10 minutes - that's not too bad and certainly helps to reach the crest faster.

Passing little church Santa Croce I’m taking direction to Kreuzkofeljoch. I know this path well from previous times when we often came here for climbing. Today I hope to make a real good photo. The higher I’m ascending the more clouds are gathering. On Schlern the first showers are falling.

But this will not hold me back – I definitely want to reach the peak! This will take me another 45 minutes, I guess ...

Civetta is now dressed in heavy thunderstorm clouds, accompanied by lightning all around. Over there at the Geisler Spitzen now and then the sun is blinking through the break in the clouds. And finally I’m on the top! Obviously this is the only place far and wide where there is no rain at all. What a visual drama among the clouds I’m witnessing right now! I look around and can hardly believe what I see: I'm just wondering how to put such an incredible atmosphere into words … and start taking pictures in all directions.

For quite some time I cannot break away, but finally I’m deciding to head home. The more I’m descending, the more the weather is clearing up and it's getting really bright. Like on most of my trips it’s already late when I return and the chair lift has stopped service. How nice would be a mountain bike now! Heavily loaded I’m starting my walk down towards the valley.

All efforts of this afternoon are more than worth it because I have three pictures now which made it into the book!

To be continued next week!
